Bats (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) in the urbanized area in South of Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i2.8783 Biological Sciences
Prone, Bruno; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Zanon, Cibele Maria Vianna; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Benedito, Evanilde; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
The present study aimed to inventory of bats species present in an urban area, located within the main campus of the State University of Maringá, northwestern Paraná State, and to present data on the diet, reproduction, and activity times of the captured species. Collections were performed monthly, between September 2007 and August 2008, and 377 individuals were captured, belonging to four species from the Phyllostomidae family: Artibeus lituratus (90%), Platyrrhinus lineatus (6.4%), Sturnira lilium (2.4%), and Carollia perspicillata (1.3%). The types of fruit ingested consisted especially of Cecropiaceae, Moraceae, Myrtaceae, Piperaceae and Solanaceae. Among the captured exemplars, 51% were female and 49% male. No pregnant females of A. lituratus or males...

Does a small forested area contribute to enhance species richness and diversity of fish assemblage at an urban stream? - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i4.16592 Biological Sciences

Conservation Units (CU) aim to contribute to the balance between human and environmental demand, by protecting natural resources and biological communities. In this study we examined the differences in the attributes of the fish community in four stretches of an urban stream, two inside and two outside the CU, without vegetation cover, and tested the hypothesis that the presence of riparian vegetation is positively reflected in the attributes of fish fauna. Five species were caught, distributed into four orders and five families. Attributes like richness, abundance, dominance, Shannon-Wiener diversity, and evenness were estimated and significant differences were detected for continuous stretches considering stream flow direction. The first stretches (URBI...

Reproductive strategies of fish populations from three Neotropical streams - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i2.10932 Biological Sciences
Zanatta, Naiara; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Cionek, Vivian de Mello; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Benedito, Evanilde; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
This study aimed to characterize the reproductive strategies of fish from first order streams. Samplings were performed every three months from June 2008 to March 2009, using electric fishing at three streams: Conceição, Scherer and Jurema, located in the municipalities of Diamante do Norte and Amaporã, Paraná State, Brazil. We obtained the total weight (g), standard or total length (cm), sex and maturation stage for each specimen. Limnological data were obtained with portable equipments. The minimum length at first maturation was established for each population, and reproduction period was determined by analyzing the distribution of maturation stages. The sex ratio was obtained and tested (X2) for significant differences. Eight species were analyzed and...

Scientometric diagnosis of the use of remote sensing images in Landscape Ecology studies - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i1.8444 Biological Sciences
Sarragiotto, Mariana Cristina; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Benedito, Evanilde; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
This work analyzed the implementation of images from the remote sensors ASTER, CBERS, IKONOS, LANDSAT, MODIS, NOAA, QUICKBIRD and SPOT in Brazilian and international Landscape Ecology studies, developed between 1991 and July 2009. The study analyzed works published in article form using the ISI Web of Knowledge website, and theses and dissertations from the “Thesis Database” at CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Ensino Superior). A total of 124 Brazilian and 144 international published works were examined, analyzing 11 and six parameters, respectively. It was observed that the images from sensors MODIS (53%) and LANDSAT (32%) are employed more frequently in international research studies, whereas in Brazil there is preference for products...

The influence of vegetal cover on carbon assimilation by Prochilodus lineatus (Characiformes: Prochilodontidae) in the upper Paraná river floodplain Biological Sciences

The present study examined the influence of the availability of riparian vegetation and C3 emergent aquatic macrophytes on carbon assimilation by Prochilodus lineatus. The vegetal cover of these producers, available at 30 m of the bank, for the terrestrial ecosystem of the rivers Baia, Ivinheima and Paraná, was quantified with the image processing Landsat 5 TM, of the year 2000, period of sampling of the biological material at each river. The assimilation of the energy sources (riparian vegetation and C3 aquatic macrophytes, C4 aquatic macrophytes, periphyton, and phytoplankton) by P. lineatus was determined by analysis of stable carbon isotopes (δ13C). The area of vegetal cover was estimated at 1,017 km2 in the Ivinheima river, 669 km2 in the Paraná...

The role of sediment on the energy availability for fishes in the upper Paraná river floodplain - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v34i4.9335 Biological Sciences
Gimenes, Michele de Faveri; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Takeda, Alice Michiyo; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Benedito, Evanilde; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
This study aimed to identify potential sources of organic matter in sediment, using stable isotopes of carbon (delta13C) and nitrogen (delta15N). Sediment samples were gathered from the margin and in center of three subsystems: Ivinheima, Paraná and Baia, in August/2001. The samples were fractionated granulometrically and separated by size (< 200 µm; 70-200 µm; > 70 µm), prepared and sent to CENA / USP, for identifying the isotopes proportions. Significant differences were detected in the isotopic ratios of the sediment only between sampling stations. The Baía channel presented the lowest delta13C values, while the highest ones were recorded in Paraná river. At this last, delta15N values were negative (-14.41‰). We did not verify significant...
